IMPASHS project: Evaluation of the impact of smoke-free policies in Member States on exposure to second-hand smoke and tobacco consumption

IMPASHS “Evaluation of the impact of smoke-free policies in Member States on exposure to second-hand smoke and tobacco consumption “ is a collaborative three-year project being funded by the European Commission’s Executive Agency for Health and Consumers.

The general objective of the project is to analyse the existing policies on SHS control in European countries and their impact on SHS exposure and tobacco consumption, and to develop a system of indicators to evaluate and monitor them at local, national and European level.

High level conference on pictorial health warnings and standardised packaging for tobacco products

A high-level conference on pictorial health warnings and standardised packaging for tobacco products will be held in the European Parliament, Brussels, on 29 February 2012 from 18:00 to 21:00. The event will be co-hosted by Members of the European Parliament Karl-Heinz Florenz, Glenis Willmott, Carl Schlyter and Antonyia Parvanova (t.b.c.).

Consultation on case studies of implementation of the WHO FCTC in the WHO European Region

The WHO Regional Office for Europe is currently preparing a collection of case studies, featuring "the art of the possible". They showcase what can be done, given determination, effort and goodwill, when a country responds to the challenge posed by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC).

The European Commission has developed the Health-EU portal, the official public health portal of the European Union, and its newsletter giving easy access to a selection of the latest news and activities in the field of public health at European and international levels. Both are fully multilingual (22 languages) and the newsletter appears twice a month (see below).

Political commitment needed for UN High Level Meeting on NCDs

The American Cancer Society urges civil society to ask national governments to ask for strong commitments to take the following actions i.a.:

  • accelerate implementation of the FCTC
  • recognize that substantially reducing tobacco consumption is the most achievable action to reduce NCDs.
