Hungary: picture warnings on packages of smoked tobacco products

The Hungarian government has given final approval to requirements for picture warnings on packages of smoked tobacco products.  These requirements for at least cigarettes will come into force at the manufacturer level on September 1, 2012.  The picture warnings to be required are taken from the European Union image library.

Weak Dutch tobacco controls will cost lives - Dutch government accused of "turning its back on science"

Leading cancer, asthma and heart health experts accused the Dutch government on Friday of "all but closing down" its tobacco controls and said such lax policies could lead to 145,000 preventable deaths by 2040.

In a letter to The Lancet medical journal, specialists from Europe, the United States and Canada said new Dutch policy moves - including weakening smoking bans in bars and ending the reimbursement of quit-smoking aids - would inevitably cost lives.

A new study by Doctors Curto, Martínez-Sánchez and Fernández estimates the prevalence of tobacco consumption and second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure in private cars, commercial vehicles and taxis in the city of Barcelona, Spain.

PMI drops demand to see research on teenage smokers

The world's largest tobacco company has backed away from its demands to see thousands of confidential interviews with British teenagers gathered as part of a university research project into children's attitudes to smoking.

Philip Morris International has quietly dropped its Freedom of Information request to see the interviews held by researchers at Stirling University, Scotland.

No smoke without fire

There is no surprise that EU Health officials are not listening to tobacco retailers and the tobacco industry, smoking costs the EU the equivalent of its budget each year, according to three public health campaigners.

Monika Kosinska is the Secretary General of the European Public Health Alliance, Cornel Radu-Loghin is Director of Policy and Strategy at the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention, and Florence Berteletti Kemp is the Director of the Smokefree Partnership.

2nd Pan-Hellenic Tobacco Control Congress - Education for a Smoke-free World - 8-10 December 2011

The 2nd Pan-Hellenic Tobacco Control Congress is taking place in Athens, Greece from 8 to 10 December 2011.

The congress will focus on the theme Education for a Smoke-free World and its motto is I learn not to smoke.

The conference takes place under the auspices of H. E. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Greek Republic, and is co-organised by the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Life-Time Learning and Religious Affairs; the Hellenic Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity; the Hellenic Anti-Cancer Society and the Harvard School of Public Health.

UEFA Announces Tobacco-Free EURO 2012

20.10.11 UEFA announced today that it will enforce a complete ban on the use, sale or promotion of tobacco in all stadia involved in UEFA EURO 2012. The regulation will apply without exception to all spaces within stadia perimeters, both indoors and outdoors. This tobacco-free policy was developed and will be implemented in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), World Heart Federation, European Healthy Stadia Network, local organising committees in the host countries, Poland and Ukraine, and local health advocacy groups.
